Dr Susanne Lee is a State Registered Clinical Scientist ( Public Health Microbiologist ) with a PhD in Legionella growth within biofilms and over 35 years’ experience in clinical and public health microbiology working within the NHS and the Public Health Laboratory Service which became the Health Protection Agency (HPA) (now Public Health England). She is a a Chartered Biologist and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Biology, The Royal Society for Public Health, The Water Management Society and the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estates Management and now works with for Leegionella Ltd as an independent Public Health Microbiologist supporting Public Health Professionals, including Infection prevention and Control, Estates , Facilities, Regulators and Risk Management teams and commercial clients including in the travel industry nationally and internationally. She specializes in the development and audit of water safety management plans and audit tools for monitoring water safety for healthcare; carrying out independent water hygiene audits, governance reviews and advising and investigating water management problems especially with respect to the detection and control of waterborne pathogens particularly legionellae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. She also works closely with NHS Trusts developing and running bespoke training for both healthcare and also commercial clients..

Dr Lee was a member of the HPA national outbreak team investigating community and hospital acquired cases and outbreaks and of waterborne disease and water system contamination incidents posing a risk to health often working closely with regulatory authorities .

Dr Lee has also been involved with the development of national and international water management guidelines including with Public Health England (PHE) and UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) updating the UK Spa pool guidelines the HSE and the Water Management Society updating national Legionella guidelines, the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group leading the update on the Hydrotherapy Pool Guidelines, the Department of Health updating guidelines for water hygiene in healthcare premises. She has also previously worked with the Queensland Departmetn of Health developing their Legionella guidelines, the World Health Organisation as an author / editor of “Legionella And The Prevention Of Legionellosis” and “Water Safety in Buildings” and is currently

Programme Director for the Royal Society of Public Health’s (RSPH) Water Webinar Series and is the Chair of the RSPH Water Special Interest Group. She has been a longstanding member of the national and International Standards committees who produce Standards relating to water microbiology including: the Code of Practice for Legionella risk assessments and sampling for Legionella.

Dr Lee is listed in the ECDC Directory of Experts and is the chair of the working revising the European Travel Guidelines for the European Study Group for Legionella Infections (ESGLI) coordinating the update of the former EWGLI technical guidelines for the prevention of travel associated Legionnaires’ disease.
